EDS students and Alum looking to perform

This a letter from Gina Provenzano conductor of the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra:

Hello everyone!

Thank you all for sending your students for the BSYO auditions.  We had a great showing and have created a very strong group.  The strings in particular are incredible.  Many are all-state students and its going to be wonderful working with these kids!!

We are still however in need of STRONG brass players in the Philharmonic Orchestra especially trombones!!  I could use one more trumpet to double on 2nd part.  We have one strong horn player but would love a couple more.  Can you please all ask your brass players one more time.  We can waive the fee and even have them play half a year if needed.  This group is going to be incredible IF I find trombones.  I will come to your school if needed to hear them.
We are playing Finlandia, Farandole and Dance Bacchanale---all huge brass parts!!!  We are also in need of one clarinet in the Philharmonic if anyone has a student interested.
The younger orchestra --Prelude is still in need of ALL wind players.   This group only plays grade level 2 at this point so a younger player (maybe a ms district honors member) will do just fine.  We have strings but welcome more.
We are willing to work with schedules--please have any interested student contact me at home at 989-5298.
Thank you again for your help----I don't want any student to miss out on this.  The level is really going to be something!

Looking forward to these students having many opportunities to perform, listen and learn about jazz.  Next month, the students will go to Nokomis High School to observe, and meet the Artist in Residence.

The following is a letter from Mr. Buchanan about the Artist in Residence:

I have some very exciting news to report about our Artisit-In-Residence this year as well as some changes to this concert.  Jeff Coffin, saxophonist with the Dave Matthew Band, has accepted my invitation to perform at our annual Artist-In-Residence program!  Mr Coffin is well known in musical circles as the man who plays two saxophones at the same time as well as bring an excellent musicians. We have had Jeff here before and the kids loved him. This will be an exciting concert that you should put on your must see list.

  • Also performing at this Nov 16th concert will be our Swing Chorus and our Vocal Jazz Ensemble in addition to our Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, and Jazz Ensemble.
  • Another big change will be an admission charge for this concert.
  • In these trying times fund raising has become increasingly more difficult and travel costs, especially for the jazz groups, has gone through the roof.
  • We hope that all understand the reasoning for the admission charge and come support our kids and listen to a world class musician.
  • This will be the only concert that we will be charging for this coming school year.
  • Adults $5.00, Students and Senior Citizens $3.00, and a special Family ticket for all in the immediate family for just $12.00.
  • This looks to be a very exciting year for our student musicians at all levels both vocal and instrumental.

Beginning of Year

The first two weeks of school are just flying by!  I'm proud to announce that we have 15 new fourth and fifth grade band members, 11 returning in second year band, 24 returning in Middle Level Band.  Thank you to all of the parents that could come out for the beginning band night.  Middle Level Chorus will have it's first class on Monday, and the third graders are starting their new challenge: recorders.  This is going to be a great year. : )
